We believe the welfare of humanity depends on such energy - that the bright future humanity deserves depends on developing entirely new energy technologies. Conservation, and thus far other identified technologies have a role to play, but they will not be enough to give humanity, particularly the developing world, the bright future it deserves.
One example of a new technology with great promise is algae based biofuels. Although there are some technology problems to overcome, Palmer Labs believes that all our current petroleum based fuels can be replaced by biofuels derived from algae or cyanobacteria.
Algae and cyanobacteria grow so rapidly that even small land areas can yield large amounts of fuel. Fuel production at a scale to replace petroleum fuels can thus be accomplished without crippling losses of land areas for food production. In fact, algae and cyanobacteria can be grown in areas not currently useable for food production. Only 1% of the land in the United States, the hottest driest, least productive 1%, can produce all the gasoline, diesel, jet, and other fuels that America needs. This would make America 100% energy independent, and completely sustainable in liquid fuels with a source that directly recycles all carbon dioxide.
Even this amazing technology, however, can be dwarfed by technologies based on new physics. Palmer Labs is exploring such technologies, and with the help of visionary scientists and investors, could make the impossible possible.
